About this piece:   This piece is a handmade pipe that I created in clay.  The stem and the face are hand built.  Most of my faces are built from scratch, so although I repeat some characters, no two are the same.  You will get a unique pipe like no other and is built to last a lifetime.   I strive to make each piece unique, detailed (more than you see at first glance) and fascinating.  Nearly all my pipes feature tiny holes into the bowl, from either the mouth or nose to puff out a little smoke (if desired) but doesn't affect the draw.  Smoke will come out of the  mouth and nose on this one similar to that in the sample photo.  Just an added amusing feature.  The pipes are beautifully glazed  (except the face usually) and fired to cone 6(2291 degrees F) so they are extremely hard.  The stem holes are large enough that they shouldn't ever clog, if they should, they will clean easily.  My clay pipes aren't as heavy as they might seem, only a few ounces.  Each piece is signed and dated.  I hope you find these as enjoyable to look at and use - as I did making them.    Why Smoke a clay pipe?  1. Clay pipes are more forgiving:
The clay from which they are made is not flammable, so one need not be
concerned if one has a habit of smoking too hot.  Burnout is impossible.
- Since clay pipes tend to have longer stems, they have a higher specific heat
(meaning they can absorb more heat) and radiate heat more readily than
briar, even if one is smoking too hot and hard, it is unlikely that tongue
bite will be an issue for most materials (some tobaccos would bite you even
if you just sprinkled them on an incense brazier, however)
- Ceramic suffers abuse more stoically than either briar or meerschaum,
but not as much as glass.
While it is true that these clay pipes are not brittle, they are unlikely to survive a fall or a sharp blow.  It's also unlikely that you will damage your pipe through over-vigorous application
of your pipe tool.  There is nothing toxic or harmful in the clay or glazes once it's been fired.2. Clay pipes do not require any break-in period or seasoning to
smoke well.  No cake is necessary, and the clay being incapable of
burning while you smoke it does not influence the flavor of the material.
While a seasoned clay pipe does smoke a little better than a fresh one, the
difference is not a great one, and a new clay pipe comes essentially "ready
to rock" with whatever material you choose to put in it.
3. The absence of any foreign material (burning briar, flavors from the
curing oil in meerschaum) in your smoke will result in a brighter, clearer
flavor, making clay pipes an excellent way to sample new smoking material or simply
to rediscover an old favorite.
About me:  I've been making items from clay since 1971.  For the most part, I'm self taught.  I've worked for 3 different pottery studios and learned more throwing and glazing techniques as I worked.  I'm coming off an 18 year hiatus and I'm back into it full time.  I also make teapots, mugs, bowls, plates and other functional ware.  Look at the photos carefully before biddingPay Pal is the preferred method of paymentInternational buyers should wait for my invoice for an accurate shipping price (free shipping within U.S. only)I will gladly combine shipping on multiple items that are purchased in the same weekEach item will be carefully packed for shippingIf you find a problem with your item, please contact me first and I'll work with you to resolve itThanks for looking at my work in clay
