Alfred Dunhill joined his father's business in London in 1887, being given full control in 1893. This was a carriage outfitting business, however Alfred Dunhill moved away from this in the early 1900s. In 1904 he actually applied for a patent on his shield pipe, a pipe with a raised front on the bowl to prevent ashes from blowing onto the smoker when he was outdoors.
Dunhill actually opened his our own tobacco shop in 1907. However, he was not impressed with the pipes he was getting from other manufacturers for his shop. He was determined to offer a better pipe, and at the same time increase his own profits, so he established his own pipe factory in 1910, employing two master craftsman. The famous white spot on Dunhill pipes was placed on the pipe to help the smoker correctly reposition stem after each use.
Dunhill pipes are crafted by hand with the utmost precision. The pipes use traditional shapes that are turned and finished by hand, Dunhill bowls being smaller, usually with a darker finish giving the customer a smaller and less noticeable pipe. The darker bowl brings less attention to the smoker and assists in downplaying the appearance of a new pipe.
