Stunning and very collectable late 19th century meerschaum and mustard amber pipe. Probably dating to the 1880s or 1890s, maybe a little after the turn of the century, this pipe has elements of classical design about it. The bowl is crafted in Meerschaum and features a (rather aggressive looking) classical god style character - could be Neptune or Bacchus,  something like that. Anyway he has a beard...a big beard. The design also makes him look somewhat as if he's wearing a turban which creates the bowl for stuffing with your favourite tobacco. The bowl is decorated with a dot and ring design; almost Celtic in style and the edge of the bowl is notched, presumably to make it easier to tamp down the tobacco and light with a match. The shaft is, I'm reliably informed, mustard amber with a bright yellow hue; for argument's sake it could be celluloid, though I think it too early for plastic, and it has a gentle curve. Length is 5.5 inches (14 cm) so smaller perhaps than the average but does the job.
Good quality, though without its case. Condition is excellent, no major signs of damage: evidence of use (through use with flames, the rim has been licked and there is some darkening to the end of the shaft) but no intrinsic damage or chips. Great collectors item for those who like a rough shag with a slightly curvy shaft.
