This auction is for a superb commemorative clay pipe created for the meeting of Hevayweight Champion of the World John L. Sullivan & the Champion of England Jem Smith at St James Hall , London in November 1887. The two met on the stage in front of a large crowd of pugilistic fans to discuss and promote a potential match up in the near future. The two fighters were regarded by many as finest two Heavyweights on the planet. They also engaged in some sparring sessions, designed to wet the appeteite for the real thing. Smith first had to take on Jake Kilrain. That fight took place in December of the same year and became an epic. The two brave warriors battled to a draw after 106 brutal rounds of a 'finish fight'. The Sullivan fight never materialised for Smith and it was Sullivan who would go on to meet Kilrain in the last Championship fight fought with bare knuckles (1889).
The following link is an article from New York paper 'The Sun' describing the meeting of Sullivan & Smith in more detail:

The pipe is unused in great condition for it's age with no damage. Sullivan items from the 1800's are incredibly rare. Few have survived, especially in such immaculate condition. Don't miss out on this boxing gem. See our other boxing auctions.
Pipes with boxers.  One named Sullivan and on the opposite side another named Smith…….very puzzling.  The only connection with the two boxers was John L Sullivan and a Jem Smith, champion of England. who were to meet but the fight never took place.  Were the pipes made to celebrate this particular fight?  Maybe.
I was told an interesting story about the John L Sullivan v Smith clay pipes. Another pipe maker jealous of the boxing pipes got in touch with John L Sullivan and told him his name was being used to sell pipes in Ireland.  The boxers reply was he was honoured that his name was being used in Ireland  as a word of mouth story can be as true as any. The pipe-maker was supposedly from Waterford…
